Cleveland is a city located in Bradley County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 37,192. It is the county seat of Bradley County. According to the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, Cleveland is home to several industries, including household cooking equipment, foodstuff, textiles, furniture, storage batteries, pharmaceuticals, industrial cleaning products, photographic processing, industrial and domestic chemicals, and automotive parts. The city is home to Cleveland State Community College, a unit of the Tennessee Board of Regents. Several Christian demoninations are represented, with Cleveland serving as the headquarters for the Church of God of Prophecy, as well as the Church of God (Cleveland) and its affiliated school, Lee University.
There are several thoughts as to the origin of the city's name. One belief is that it is named after Cleveland, England. Other traditions say the community was named for Cleveland, Ohio; or for Benjamin Cleveland, Revolutionary War soldier; or for John Cleveland, an original local settler.

As of the census of 2000, there are 37,192 people, 15,037 households, and 9,518 families residing in the city. The population density is 575.5/km2 (1,490.9/mi2). There are 16,431 housing units at an average density of 254.3/km2 (658.7/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 89.00% White, 7.01% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.97% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.29% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 2.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 15,037 households out of which 28.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the city the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 15.4% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.0 males.
